The President of the United States (POTUS) is the head of state and head of government of the United States of America. He directs the executive branch of the federal government, and is the commander-in-chief of the United States Armed Forces.
The second article of the Constitution establishes that the executive branch of the federal government vests in the executive power of the president of the United States. It includes the execution and enforcement of federal law, the responsibility of appointing federal executive, diplomatic, regulatory and judicial officers, and signing of treaties with foreign powers with the advice and consent of the Senate.
The president, just like any citizen, is also entitled to economic benefits. He receives a monthly income for his services. Since 2001, the president’s annual income has been close to half a million dollars, along with a: US$50,000 expense allowance, US$100,000 nontaxable travel account, and US$19,000 entertainment account. No wonder he’s such an influential political figure.
Here’s Your Bill Mr President
The White House serves as the office and residence of the president. The site was chosen by George Washington, and the cornerstone was laid in 1792. It has been the residence for every president since John Adams in 1800. It has been known as the ‘President’s Palace,’ the ‘President’s House,’ and the ‘Executive Mansion.’ Theodore Roosevelt gave it’s official (and current) name as the White House in 1901.
The president is allowed to use certain facilities in the White House which include access to the White House staff, medical care unit, recreational facilities, housekeeping, and the security services. The federal government pays for state dinners and other official functions, whereas the president pays for his personal, family, guest, laundry services, and food expenses, just to mention a few.
Remember To Pay Your Bills
The president of the United States is entitled by law to make payments for any expenditure he endures personally during his tenure of office in the White House. And so as any official living or working in the White House. The federal government is entitled to make payments for expenditure of state functions that are held in the White House.
So, whatever personal affair the president wants to host with his family and friends is his sole business, and has to account for that expenditure personally. That’s not meant for the federal government.
