Meet Jonathan Lee Riches
In 2009, the Guinness World Record planned on announcing Jonathan Lee Riches as the world’s most litigious man. Mr Riches, also known as “Irving Picard,” heard of this and did what he does best, filed a lawsuit. Here’s the catch: is he really the litigious man on Earth? How many lawsuits has he filed? And does such a record even exist?
Riches is a convicted fraudster well-known for the many lawsuits he has filed in various US district courts. He was once incarcerated at the Federal Medical Center in Lexington, Kentucky for a crime against wire fraud. He later got a plea deal, and was released on April 30, 2012.
Riches lawsuit against the Irish record-holding institution is just one of several lawsuits in his growing stash of outrageous court filings against everyone. From individuals to corporates to federal and state institutions to even you.
Myth Or Fact: Dozen Lawsuits
While serving his time in Lexington, Riches wrote in a handwritten document that he had actually filed more than 4,000 lawsuits in countless courts. He said the Guinness World Records mentioned 5,500 in a letter officially congratulating him on his feat. For this reason, Riches filed a lawsuit against Guinness World Records for misinformation about his number of lawsuits.
According to Riches, he sent a series of letters to the Guinness World Records declining the offer because the facts were wrong. He also stated that the Encyclopedia Britannica and the Library of Congress are two of more co-defendants who have published his name as being the most litigious person in the world. Riches admitted that he had suffered injuries as a result of his numerous lawsuits, which include “arthritis in my fingers, numbness in my wrists [and] crooked fingers.”
In view of this, he claimed that he faced: “imminent (sic) danger and bodily harm from the Defendant’s (sic) who plan to publish me and about my life in their books without my authorization or consent.”
And while serving his time in prison, he wrote, “when I get out of prison I’m going to start a lawsuit 101 shop and teach Americans how to file prose lawsuits.” He also wrote his plans to sell T-shirts captioned “watch what you do or I’ll sue you.”
Did He Really Sue Guinness?
Of course, he did. But that’s not the million dollar question. Does the Guinness World Records even recognize the category for the “most litigious person in the world?” According to sources, a spokesperson at the Guinness World Records responded to Riches’ allegations:
“Jonathan Lee Riches is not a record holder, and a category for the most litigious man is not something Guinness World Records has ever monitored as a record category.”
