What started as a bulky device that only a few people could afford and was only used for making and receiving calls has evolved into a sleek, multifunctional tool and powerful mini computer that we can’t seem to live without. Whence Cometh Cellphones?
Since the first ever mobile phone, the Motorola DynaTAC, popularly known as “The Brick” which weighed a little over a kilogram (2.5 pounds), had 30 minutes of talk time, and could store 30 numbers was invented and introduced by Motorola engineers John F. Mitchell and Martin Cooper, in 1973, there has been an incredible evolution of mobile phones. Each new generation of phones brings faster processors, better cameras, and more features.
What Does The Future Hold?
Here are a few predictions: one area that is sure to see continued improvement is battery life. As we demand more from our phones, manufacturers are working hard to create batteries that can keep up. Battery life will continue to improve, giving us longer-lasting devices that don’t need to be charged as often.
Another big area of focus is the 5G technology which is also being developed and tested by major telecom companies. This promises much faster data speeds and lower latency than the current 4G. It will as well open up new possibilities for mobile devices and will also be great for streaming videos and playing mobile games on your phone.
We can also expect to see even more powerful artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities and applications such as voice assistants and predictive text features in our phones as they continue to get smarter and more efficient.
There are a few things that are currently in development that could change the way we use our mobile devices. One is called Project Soli from Google Advanced Technology & Projects (ATAP). It is a radar-based gesture control system that can detect very fine motions, like rubbing your thumb and index finger together. This could be used to control things like volume or scroll through a webpage without actually touching the phone.
Dawn Of The Smartphone Era
Another thing that is being worked on is flexible displays. We’ve seen prototypes of phones with screens that wrap around the edges and even ones that can be rolled up like a scroll. This would allow for much more compact devices, as well as opening up new possibilities for interaction and design.
More powerful processors and better graphics chips will allow for even more immersive gaming experiences on mobile devices.
Augmented reality will become more commonplace as phone manufacturers incorporate it into their hardware and software offerings. With all these features, it looks like it will be more compact, more interactive, and faster than ever before.
