Here are three reasons why you should not be littering the environment.

Littering is the improper disposal of waste products in the environment. Littering may be intentional or unintentional but largely a deliberate act. Litter ranges from cigarette butts and fast food packaging to plastic bottles and bags. Other than just being nasty, litter has grave consequences for the environment and the community. #1. Litter Pollutes Water, Land, And The Air

Did you know that 60 percent of water pollution is attributed to litter? Degradation of litter releases chemicals and microparticles which are not natural to the environment and can cause damage to aquatic life.

In addition to water pollution, litter also pollutes the land and the air. As litter is burned, toxic emissions are released which can cause respiratory problems and other health problems.

#2. Cleaning Up Litter Cost Governments Money

Each year, governments spend lofty amounts of money to clean and dispose of litter. Littering along the highways and streets must be cleaned and disposed of daily to keep the environment and people safe. This costs taxpayers money and may sometimes cause the diversion of funds for other purposes to be used to clean litter.

#3. Litter Facilitates Spread Of Disease

Litter is a breeding ground for germs and pathogens. Bacteria can be transmitted directly by coming into physical contact with litter either by picking up or touching it. Bacteria and other pathogens can also be transmitted to humans indirectly through vectors. Vectors are animals that come into contact with contaminated litter and transmit the pathogens to humans.
